Professor Shan Rajendra

Professor Rajendra obtained his undergraduate medical degree from the National
University of Ireland in 1988 and worked in the National Health Service, UK for 6 years.
After a South-East Thames Gastroenterology and General Medicine career registrar
rotation (Guy’s/Lewisham/Hither Green), he became a Research Fellow in the Digestive
Diseases Research Centre, St. Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College, London. He is
currently Professor of Medicine (Gastroenterology), University of New South Wales,
Senior Clinical Academic Gastroenterologist/Interventional Endoscopist and Head of
Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Bankstown Hospital, Sydney. He specializes in
advanced therapeutic upper GI endoscopy, colonoscopy including removal of large
polyps and undertaking complicated bile/pancreatic duct procedures (ERCP). Also,
undertakes balloon enteroscopy and capsule endoscopy.
His main research interest is gastro-esophageal reflux disease and Barrett’s oesophagus
and has well over 50 publications as first or last author in high impact factor journals. His
research has been featured in the Lancet Oncology and Medscape. Until recently, he was
a WEB committee member of the International Society of Diseases of the Oesophagus
(ISDE) as well as an Associate Editor of its official publication, Diseases of the
Esophagus. Having worked briefly in South-East Asia, he developed an interest in
treating gut infections. He has published on tropical sprue, a condition not dissimilar to
small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) or gut dysbiosis, both conditions being
frequently misdiagnosed as Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
Prof Rajendra is the Founding Director and Lead Investigator of the Gastro-Intestinal
Viral Oncology Group, Ingham Institute, Liverpool, Sydney. This was the first group in
the world to discover that high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) is strongly associated
with Barrett’s dysplasia and oesophageal adenocarcinoma. He is the world authority on
human papilloma virus infection in Barrett’s oesophagus and oesophageal
adenocarcinoma and his research has been featured in extensively in both the national
(ABC, Sydney Morning Herald, Health Report with Dr. Norman Swan, Sydney Morning
Herald, The Daily Telegraph, news.com.au) and international media (The Times of India,
The Sun, NZ Herald). This research is also cited in UpToDate, the most popular
mainstream point of care medical resource for medical practitioners throughout the
world.
